DLR-Project Founding (2022 - 2025)
(FKZ: 01EK2107A)
Motivation:
• Development of a novel digitized spacer for longitudinal tracking of the infection situation in two-stage total endoprosthesis (TEP) replacement
• Up to 30% (BRD) of patients with joint implants are affected by infections
Main question: When can the spacer interval be terminated and the final endoprosthesis be implanted?
Our Vision:
• Digitalized spacer system, for local, continuous non-invasive and objective measurements (e.g. video images from inside the knee and spectral information)
• Definition of a threshold value (when is the joint considered bug free)
• Elimination of arthroscopies and their risks (anesthesia, embolisms, new infections and trauma)
• Reduction of treatment costs by shortening inpatient treatment
